New Location tool works much better! Supports more countries and provinces. Be Found!
We have suffered frustration because the previous tool did not include all countries and provinces and was prone to error, for example people from India were showing up in Tennessee, and newer provinces in France were not recognized, Russia was not available, and so on.
We are greatly relieved that we have been able to upgrade this tool so that it includes many more areas, allows more precise location information, and it works the way the instructions indicate.
For many of you, no changes will be needed. Find out by doing two searches.
- First check and see if your province/state shows up here: http://www.cnvc.org/en/find-someone/find
- Select your country and your state or province and click on Submit.
- Notice if see your name, your city, your province, and your home country.
- Second, use the Find a Supporter (map) http://www.cnvc.org/en/find-someone-gmap,
- Using the + sign zoom in to your location on the map.
- Notice if the pin or bubble is positioned at your location.
If the city and state/province information is not present in the list, or if the pin is not correctly positioned on the map, you will want to edit the location section of your Information Profile.
Here is how you do that:
Login at http://www.cnvc.org/en/user
(You can request help with your password on the Request New Password tab if you would like.)
- Click on the Profile Information Tab
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and find the location section.
- Click on the box before Delete and click on Submit to delete the current location.
- Click on the Profile Information tab again and scroll to the location section.
It is important to know that the Location Name in this section will not be seen by someone visiting the web site. The information you enter is read by computer programs to locate the longitude and latitude of your location. Therefore you do not have to worry about publicly exposing your address by what you enter here.
Also, city information like “Central Vermont”, or “Norwich near Hanover” will be meaningless to the program, let people see that kind of information by entering it in the Public Location Field located higher in the page. Remember the people who are looking for you this way are most likely nearby.
- For most people entering their actual mailing address, including street address will pinpoint your location. Here is an example of how you do it.
Location Name: 385 New Boston Road
City: Norwich
Country: United States
State/Province:* Vermont
Postal Code: 05055
*Hint Select your country first, then start to type the name of your province or state; you will get a list of provinces/states for your country from which to choose. This guarantees the program will recognize your entry. - Click on Submit to save your changes.
- Return to the Profile Information Tab and scroll to the Location section and look at the map.
If the map does not show a pin at your location is a little more work will help.
- Enter the name of a larger nearby city in the City field, and select your country.
- Click on submit
- Click on the Profile Information tab and scroll to the location section.
- Click once on the gray bubble.
- This will create a red-orange bubble nearby. You may need to zoom out (-) a bit to see the bubble.
- You can now drag this bubble to your actual location.
- Click Submit to save your changes.
- Return to the Profile Information tab and scroll to the location section and replace the name of the nearby city with your city or town.
- Click on Submit to save your changes.
